Planning a Visit to Masaya Volcano

Two sessions, and they show you different things
The park runs a daytime session and a separate evening one. Daylight gives you the scale of the caldera, the colour of the rock and the trails; the evening gives you the orange light thrown up out of the vent. The evening session opens in the late afternoon and vehicles are admitted as they arrive, which is why guided departures leave Granada and Managua while it is still light.

What a ticket covers, and who collects it
Admission to Masaya Volcano National Park covers the road to the crater car park, the geological museum near the gate, the marked trails and the lookouts. Evening entry costs more than daytime entry, which is standard for the session that carries the glow.
On a guided evening the fee is usually inside your fare. Three of these trips handle it differently, and each says so in its own description: one covers admissions only on its all-inclusive option, one charges $35 per person on its flexible fare, and one leaves the park fee with you on the day. Read the inclusions line before you pay and there is nothing to sort out at the gate.
Prices at the gate move, and published figures disagree. Rather than quote a number that may be a year old, book a trip whose fare already covers admission — the fully-inclusive evenings are marked on the Masaya Volcano tours and tickets list and settle it before you arrive.

Most of these evenings put the park fee inside the fare, so there is nothing to pay at the gate and nothing to work out in the dark.
Getting to the gate from Managua or Granada
The park entrance sits on the highway between Managua and Masaya, with Granada the closer of the two tourist bases. Operators running from Managua build a transfer of roughly 45 minutes into the evening; the Granada departures are shorter, which is why the compact two-hour trips all leave from there.

How long you get at the crater rim
This is the number that decides which trip suits you, and it is not the same as the length of the tour. The park limits how long vehicles stay at the top, because the gas is continuous and cars are let up in batches. Itineraries here range from fifteen minutes at the volcano to two hours.

What to wear and what to carry
- Shoes: closed, with a bit of grip. The trail to El Comalito is loose gravel.
- Layer: the rim is breezy once the sun goes, even in the dry season.
- Water: only two of these trips include drinks, so bring a bottle.
- Rain jacket: earns its place between May and October.
- Camera: handheld. A tripod is awkward in a short rim window and the light moves faster than you can set one up.
- Inhaler: if you use one, keep it in a pocket rather than in the vehicle.
Gas, and the reason the rim window is short
Sulphur dioxide rises out of the vent continuously and the wind decides which side of the car park it crosses. Most visitors notice a smell and a slight catch in the throat, and guides move groups to the clear side when the plume swings. The park's own answer is to keep visits brief and rotate vehicles through.

Booking, cancelling and changing your date
